High Voltage Test Lab
The PCORE High Voltage Laboratory
Center for Research and Development of EHV Products
Lapp has a long-term Agreement to access and utilize the HVL with PCORE. PCORE laboratory facilities for high voltage and
extra-high voltage testing of insulators and bushings are unsurpassed
in the industry. Both indoor and outdoor facilities, designed
to operate separately or jointly, provide for impulse, switching
surge, 60-cycle, radio noise, corona, load-life, and heat run
testing. |
The indoor facilities of the PCORE High Voltage Laboratory
are housed in a grounded, metal-walled building containing an
impulse generator rated 2,250,000 volts at 28 kilojoules, a
60-cycle test set consisting of two transformers arranged in
cascade with voltages from zero to 1,000,000 volts at 0.2 amperes
and high current equipment for testing to 10,000 amperes. The
indoor laboratory has facilities for conducting partial discharge
tests / radio influence voltage (RIV) tests at a maximum of
600,000 volts to ground for corona measurement. |

The outdoor, EHV complex has a totally enclosed, all weather
surge generator rated at 4,3000,000 volts at 115 kilojoules,
controllable as to wave shape for all impulse (1.2 x 50 microseconds)
and switching surge (200 x 4,000 microseconds) testing of insulator
assemblies and bushings with operating voltages to 765 kV with
both resistance and capacitance voltage dividers available.
The outdoor testing area also offers a 60-cycle test set consisting
of three transformers arranged in cascade with voltages from
zero to 1,500,000 volts at 0.2 amperes. |
Special facilities for producing water at any desired resistivity
at a rate of approximately 125 gallons per minute feed a bank of
spray towers which produce a controlled spray for wet tests, capable
of handling assemblies as large as switches at 2,050 BIL.
A full scale transmission test tower is available in the outdoor
laboratory for design testing of 500 kV suspension/hardware assemblies
has a 50-foot window for center phase testing, a 35-foot arm for
outside phase assemblies and a 100-foot spans to dead-end towers.
Movable structural members mounted within the test tower allow simulation
of any transmission tower window design.
